Two golf courses open seven days a week, year-round

When Savannah Lakes Village residents Chuck and Denise Uitto were searching for a place to live in retirement, they had only one requirement:

No snow.

But the avid golfers, hailing from Ohio, received so much more when they made their move to South Carolina five years ago. They found friendship among a diverse and thriving golfing community; and a reason to stay beyond the weather forecast.

While the prospect of mild temperatures and residing among well-maintained golf courses drew the couple here, what’s kept them here is what they’ve found in the space between their golf games: their community.

Watch their story here.

Savannah Lakes Village is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses, Tara and Monticello. Both courses are open year-round; with opportunities for competitive golfers as well as social players hoping to learn more about the game.

“The first thing people say when they golf here is, ‘Geez, these aren’t retirement courses,” says Chuck. “You hear it from everybody.”

“What he means by that,” adds Denise, “Is that there’s a lot of hills and uneven slopes, but you adjust to it.”

Both Chuck and Denise are seasoned golfers and spend their days in various leagues and social groups.

“The trick is to balance it all,” says Chuck. “But it’s fun! It’s fun to be busy.”

Aside from the community and the adventure the golf courses bring to their life in retirement, the couple also attests to the upkeep of the slopes.

“I go to many golf tournaments around the state, and into North Carolina, and these are the nicest golf courses that I’ve been to in both North and South Carolina,” says Denise.

She attributes this upkeep to both the professionalism of the maintenance team as well as well as the residents who “adopt a hole” near their homes. These residents take it upon themselves to fill in divots players may have missed, and ensure everything is running smoothly on the courses.

“It’s like a neighborhood watch program for the golf course,” says Denise.

The residents look out for one another, too, the couple says. Through their season of living in Savannah Lakes Village, Chuck and Denise have made connections that go beyond the golf course. They’ve grown to rely and depend on their community.
“If it ever snows here, it’s the people that are going to keep me here,” says Chuck.
