BY ROSE TRACY

One the evening of June 21, twenty five members of the OAC gathered for a sunset/moonrise kayak event.  The weather was perfect - mid 80s and zero chance of rain - and the water was smooth as glass.  We launched from the boat ramp at Hickory Knob State Park and paddled out to the end of the point for a good view of the setting sun and the rising of the Strawberry Moon.  The June full moon is named after the wild strawberries that ripen during that month and would be gathered by the Native American tribes.  We saw a gorgeous sunset, but sadly the moonrise was partially obscured by clouds.  By the time we paddled back and started to load our kayaks, the moon had risen above the clouds and was shining brightly.

If you are not a member of the OAC, you can start enjoying fun kayaking, biking, hiking, etc events by emailing your info to oac@slv-sc.com. Annual dues are $25.
