Parking in the McCormick library lot, I could already hear the laughter of children. As I walked closer to the adjacent children’s playground; the joy and excitement grew even louder. Some children were painting, while others ran gleefully from one piece of playground equipment to another.
The only lull in the day was as we all enjoyed an outdoor picnic; compliments of Library Director Paul Brown and his staff. But that didn’t last long as children quickly found a seat in front of singer/song writer/ performer, Irene Rose, under the new pavilion.
Rose, an award-winning children’s song writer from Charleston, soon had the kids singing and dancing to songs about friendship and positivity. Children volunteered for different singing parts, waved ribbon flags and sang with enthusiasm. A highlight was having Rose and the kids singing and dancing to her “Children’s Song of the Year”, entitled “It’s OK to Make Mistakes”, which won first place at the 2025 JMA awards in Nashville. It was one of those moments when you remember the carefree energy of youth!
In addition to lunch and entertainment, Brown identified the major donors who made the handsome pavilion a reality. Now families can be protected from inclement weather and enjoy rest and food; using the new pavilion picnic tables. Adjacent to the library, the playground’s location encourages families to come in and take advantage of all the library has to offer our community.
Representatives from each donor group, including the Self Family Foundation, County of McCormick, Friends of the Library, McCormick Lions Club, and McCormick Girl Scouts, were each invited up to cut a specific ribbon; acknowledging their contribution.
The weather was beautiful, a perfect backdrop to this joyful event. Most important is knowing McCormick children and our town’s young visitors have an inviting place to relax while enjoying the playground. Thanks to all who made the pavilion a reality.
