The McCormick High School Boys Golf Team hosted the Abbeville Team on April 12 at the Monticello course. This was the team’s first interscholastic competition. They played 9 holes of stroke play.
Shorelines spoke with SLV resident, AJ Piwowarski about his involvement with the team and the SLV community’s support.
Q: What is your role in the McCormick High School Boys Golf Team?
A: I am the Assistant Coach
Q: How did you get involved in working with the McCormick HS Boys Golf Team?
A: I’ve known Lee Hundt for some time and last year he mentioned that the school was forming a team. I asked if he needed anything and his reply was that they had no equipment and no real place to play. I asked if I could help.
The SLV BOD, the CEO, and Director of Golf worked to allow us to use the Monticello course as our home. It has world class facilities for the team.
Q: How many students are on the McCormick HS Boys Golf Team?
A: Pre-COVID we had 12 students playing. Post-COVID we are dealing with virtual learning and transportation issues, and are down to 5 boys. In SC Girls Golf is a fall sport, and we hope to revive that program in August.
Q: Are there any other upcoming matches at local golf courses?
A: Because the program is so new we are reaching out to other local schools to schedule competitions.
Q: How has SLV supported the McCormick High School Boys Golf Team?
A: The community support has been fantastic! Residents donated 26 sets of clubs and 1,000 of balls. The Brothers Cup raised and donated over $700 for uniforms.
