AMERICA’S BOATING CLUB – Thurmond Lake hosted several events during August and the first weekend of September.  A Poker Run was held on Saturday, September 6 that allowed members to participate by boat or car.  Each participant collected one envelope from 5 stops so that each person had 5 envelopes marked 1,2,3,4,5 with a card in each for a poker hand.  The envelopes were opened at the Plum Branch Lakeside Grille where the winners were announced and participants enjoyed a delicious meal.
A Beach Bash was held on Saturday, August 30 at the home of Larry Hilburn and Karen Love for a time of fellowship and fun.  Hamburgers and hot dogs were provided by the hosts, and everyone else brought pot luck for a grand time by all.
Two ABC classes were held in August bringing the total number of students to 55 who completed the class this boating season.  Certified instructors included Education Officer Chester Mott, Commander Gary Edwards, and Membership Director Bryce Johnson.  The first class was conducted on August 2, 3, 7, and the second ABC class was conducted on August 23, 24, 28.
America’s Boating Club – Thurmond Lake held its August monthly meeting at the Mojito’s Mexican restaurant in McCormick.  Bryce Johnson gave a PowerPoint presentation on the history of wooden boats along with the advantages and disadvantages of them.  Wooden boats are preferred by some boaters because of their unique environmental considerations, intrinsic beauty, and distinct characteristics that set them apart from other types of vessels.
