When Green Curtains Community Theatre presents Nunsense, audiences will come for the laughs, music and lively theatrical antics. But behind the production is a story nearly as entertaining as the show itself—a story of three people whose lifelong journeys through theatre, music and dance have converged on one stage.
Director Scott Crane, Musical Director Ruth Garrard and Choreographer Laura Moberly bring nearly 150 years of combined experience to the production. Their backgrounds stretch from high school drama clubs and childhood talent contests to college theatre, professional-level performances, music education, choreography and decades of community theatre.
Together, they represent three essential ingredients of a successful musical production: the story, the music, and the movement.
For Crane, theatre began in high school. Acting classes and drama club led to years of performing with the Fremont Civic Theatre group in Colorado, where he appeared in productions including The Mousetrap, Fiddler on the Roof and Spoon River Anthology. At Northwestern College of Iowa, Crane double-majored in Religion and Theatre/Speech.
Crane’s theatre experience has extended well beyond acting. He has built sets, run lighting and worked behind the scenes. Crane also served as technical director at Northwestern College of Iowa.
After moving to the Savannah Lakes Village area in 2023, Crane became involved with Green Curtains, acting in the Arsenic and Old Lace radio play and Nana’s Naughty Knickers. For Nunsense, he steps into the director’s role, drawing on a lifetime of experience onstage, backstage and in the director’s chair.
Moberly’s theatrical journey began at home. “My earliest memories are of my parents dancing in the house—and my older brother and I imitating them,” she said.
That early fascination with movement led to dance classes, high school productions and college studies focused on choreography for the stage. Over the years, Moberly has studied ballet, pointe, jazz and modern jazz at colleges, studios and dance programs across the country.
Her choreography credits include a long list of musical theatre productions with the Northern Lakes Arts Association in Ely, Minnesota, including Fiddler on the Roof, Pippin, Cabaret, Guys & Dolls, and West Side Story.
Moberly joined Green Curtains in 2022 and has been involved with every production. She directed Arsenic & Old Lace, contributed choreography to Songs of America and served as the Assistant Director for Nana’s Naughty Knickers.
Garrard’s musical career began when she was just 5 years old. She was a winner on the Sankens Youth Review talent contest at Augusta’s historic Miller Theatre, sponsored by WGAC Radio. She began piano lessons at age 10 and was playing in church by age 13.
At the Woman’s College of Georgia, now Georgia College & State University, Garrard studied piano and voice and earned a degree in Music Education.
Her career has included teaching school music, directing choirs and musicals, serving as a church music director and worship leader, accompanying musical theatre students and performing as a soloist.
Her Green Curtains experience includes serving as pianist and soloist for Songs of America. Now she brings her extensive background in piano, voice, arranging, choral music and music education to Nunsense as musical director.
Crane brings the perspective of an actor and director; Moberly brings the creativity of a dancer and choreographer; and Garrard brings the musical expertise of a pianist, vocalist, arranger and educator. Their combined experience spanning nearly 150 years, is a collaboration happening in real time—in rehearsals, in musical numbers, in choreography and in the small creative decisions that transform a script into a live performance. Nunsense will truly be blessed!
