Tennis State Championship

By Nathan Elliott

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE “Ageless Wonders!” The 6.0 Mixed Doubles team from Savannah Lakes lived up to their name by winning the 65+ age division to bring home another State Championship. “We are here to defend our title,” declared captain Heidi Martin when they arrived in Florence, SC on Thursday, September 6. Martin was captain of the team that won the championship in this division last year. After dropping the first match 2-1, the SLV team realized they had two more matches in which to defeat their one opposing team—a determined team from Coastal Carolina (Bluffton). SLV won their second match 2-1 and moved on Saturday afternoon in the sweltering heat to sweep with all three lines winning! The team members joining Heidi are Glynda Frazier, Andrya and Jerry Lowther, Marsha Lusby, Ron Martin, Bill and Paula McDonald, Rosemarie Nalevaiko, Chris Nied, and Ron Younts.
Another SLV mixed doubles team, 7.0 SLV Players, arrived at Florence facing a field of 12 teams in the 55+ age division. After winning their round robin group, they found themselves facing a strong team from Columbia in the Semi-finals with a chance to advance to the Finals on Sunday afternoon. However, victory was elusive when the final two lines each lost by two points in a third set tie breaker.
“Each player fought hard in every match. I am proud of the team!” declared Jack Snellgrove.
Congratulations to team members for a good run: Jerry Campbell, Ann Fago, Jill and Jon Grobeck, Marsha and Mike Lusby, Kathie Kase, Bill Reynolds, Marilyn Semones, Clark Stearns, Lana and Jack Snellgrove, captains.
